Brent Lawrence

Feature Image

Brent Lawrence is the creator of an entirely unique art style. His masterful works are stainless steel sculptures, hand hewn with patina. Brent is a second generation metal sculptor. His father, Gary Lawrence, a renowned metal sculptor in his own right, passed on his love of art to his son as well as giving him full access to his studio.

As a child, growing up near the ocean and in the woods of rural Oregon, he was surrounded by nature on all sides which became a major influence in his art. His family business is an art gallery, which enabled him to meet hundreds of artists and discuss all types of techniques and styles from a very early age.

It took two years of experimentation to develop the technique to transform a sheet of stainless steel with metal fabrication and patina into this stimulating and exciting art form. Lawrence was extremely interested in primitive art and carefully studied the simplicity of line and natural textures and colors found in nature and in prehistoric art. Using the patina process, he discovered the secret of patina on stainless steel. His facility with patinas provides him with an unusually broad color palette in shades of brown, gray, rust, and even black. Lawrence prefers the steel to bronze because of the stability in adverse weather conditions common to several parts of the country.

With the cave art of Europe as a point of departure, he integrates the images of the wildlife of the west into his current work.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

“With smoke, fire and the most primitive imagery — the ancient cave wall echoes the hopes and dreams of mankind. From its earliest evolution, mankind has expressed itself in painting and carving stories, fantasies, and hope for those who follow.

I, too, leave a legacy with the development of a method by which stone-like textures and wildlife images merge on stainless steel. Along with capturing the ancient feel and emotion of the shamanistic images, I use various chemicals, techniques, and equipment to recreate the fragile cave wall that has existed for thousands of years with art that will endure in the most extreme outdoor environments.

While creating these pieces I often reflect upon the cave dwellers of 30,000 years ago and try to capture the urgency of the images, the spiritual fascination, and the majesty of the wildlife that is depicted in my work.” — Brent Lawrence
