Jami Tobey

Jami Tobey is a Southern California painter who has become well known for her impressionist and intricate landscapes. Using layers of acrylics, watercolor and ink, Jami's paintings have depth and color that have made them a hit in the galleries she shows at throughout the country. As the daughter of renowned southwest sculptor, Gene Tobey, Jami grew up working alongside her dad in his studio. She sites her father as her best teacher, and the motivator in continuing working, changing, and growing as an artist.

Growing up in an artistic household in Santa Fe, Jami always felt that art was a way of life. She taught both elementary and middle school for several years, but continued to paint or draw until late every night. “Art is something I simply need to do. It's both healing and exciting.” This was especially true when her oldest child, Tobey, was diagnosed with Autism, making her art more and more of a creative outlet for both Jami and her two kids. She continues to be prolific, saying, “energy begets more energy, and the more I paint the more that I want to paint”. Inspired by the natural landscapes of the places she travels, Jami brings a sketch book and camera everywhere she goes.

Jami is a Graduate of Western State College of Colorado with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art and English. Her specialties are landscapes in acrylics & Ink with sizes ranging from 4 x 6 inches to 6 x 8 feet. She exhibits nationally in several galleries and has been the featured artist in numerous one woman shows. She was Southwest Art Magazine's Artist to Watch in 2006 and featured in the November Issue of Southwest Art in 2009. Her work has been featured in over fifty shows throughout the United States including: Santa Fe NM, Palm Desert CA, Durango CO, and Park City UT. She has won an Honorable Mention, 2000 and First Place, 2001 in the Arts in the Country Art Show in Temecula CA. In 2003, Jami created a Painted Pony for the city of Temecula. She has written and illustrated a children's book entitled, “Silvertip's Majestic Journey”, which is currently being shopped to publishers by her literary agent. Jami takes delight in writing her monthly column, The Busy Woman for Valley Living magazine.
