Richard Pankratz

Richard began his full time art career in 1975 after studying at the Kansas City Art Institute and earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in art from Emporia Kansas State University. Up until that time he taught art for 11 years in public schools. He and his wife Linda have been gallery owners in Colorado since 1982 with Linda managing the gallery and Richard devoting the majority of his time to creating art. His process is one of uncovering the miracle of discovery in order to define his creative spirit. It has been a lifetime commitment to the unique that is graining strength in him as society careens into a big box, mass produced, sterile and technologically precise new millennium.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
“My world is in 3-D. I like the way form interacts with space and derives meaning from the intention of the artist. I strive to create forms which demand space around them for balance, and then come to completion by communicating to and connecting with fellow travelers along life’s journey. I need to cause viewers of my sculptures to respond to the substance of the form sharing their space. Therefore, for most of the sculptures I make, I feel compelled to also write about the reason that the form now exists. Art needs this interaction with a viewer because without a thought being communicated, received, and responded to, there isn’t much point in making the form to occupy the space.
I often combine ceramic with bronze because each material has an integrity and a quality that does not cross translate.”
